The 2-Year-Old Art Critic
Rosemary: Mama, what's that?
Me: That is a bronze sculpture.
Rosemary: Oh. It looks like poop.

– Rosemary’s got quite the idea of a birthday party

I’ve been waiting for the day the girls play together, and it’s developing so adorably.
This morning, they set up a tea party for all the toy animals. Sure, Anthea does some things that are a little, uh, counterproductive to feeding plastic animals wooden food and fake tea. But, she really gets into it now. Yes, that’s her feeding a snake a finger-cream biscuit. And the...

I Scream, You Scream
Got some free ice cream today. Delicious, handcrafted strawberry, and the day was pretty warm, making it even more tasty. Both kids liked it, which surprised me.
Anthea balks at most things I try to feet her bites of, especially desserts, which I occasionally try to get her to sample. She didn’t even care for her birthday cake a few months back! But, she is kind of a little aficionado....

We’ve had a rush of warm-weather lately. Each day we’re greeted with blue sky, I take these little spitfires to the park. One day this week, we ended up next to an empty skate park. Rosemary, Anthea, and their friend tore around that place like Tony Hawk, no actual skateboards or equipment required. They slid down every ramp, and were so filthy by the time we left, all I...

Everything is new to Anthea. Even mud puddles. You can walk in them, you can pick up rocks and throw them in, you can even put your face into the puddle, for the full experience.
I remember last year, I walked down our alley with Rosie splashing in puddles. Anthea was asleep in her car seat, a tiny infant who didn’t like the sun on her face or the chilly breeze. What a difference a...

Rosemary Says
Rosemary: Where's daddy?
Me: He is at work.
Rosemary: Why?
Me: So he can make money to pay for our house, and food and toys.
Rosemary: Oh, ok. I'm gonna make some money and buy everyone hotdogs.

Today we went to a tot Easter event. Anthea got to visit the Easter Bunny and hunt some eggs for the first time (she got about three in her bucket and then removed them all and put them back in, and that was the end of the hunt).
Rosemary was hesitant to approach the bunny, and requested that Anthea go first. Both were skeptical and refused to sit together. But hey, no crying. Rosemary...

My kid is obsessed with Minnie Mouse. I don’t really know how it happened, but she just gravitates toward Minnie wherever we go. Sometimes, when it’s rainy, we just go to Target and I let the kids explore the toy section, as I chase behind them and put things back on the shelf. Every time she has freedom, she beelines it for the Minnie stuff.
She has accumulated a few little...

Last week, we had a visit from Grandma Cici. The weather was really nice and we got to take walks, visit the beach, and play at the park. We even hit up the pool for some swimming (and hot-tubbing, as Rosemary would have only so much of the colder water.) Rosemary really liked playing with her grandma’s jewelry and showing off her toys. Anthea loved her first wagon ride, and all of...

I am trying to preserve this age of Anthea in my memory, but it is equally so rich and fleeting, I cannot even remember the particulars of yesterday’s breakfast.
She is becoming a little girl so quickly. So stubborn and emotional and studious and endearing. So much of the leaps and bounds lately are because of sweet, free mobility. At the park, she moves between climbing and exploring...

Anthea's Birthday Party
We had some family over today for a birthday party to celebrate our one-year-old.
I’m pretty proud of how our Minnie Mouse cake came out. We got a white cake with raspberry filling from Whole Foods, but did the decorations ourself. Anthea immediately grabbed and smeared it before blowing out her candle, but it was cute while it lasted. Plus, it was pretty AND delicious. We...

February
This was a whirlwind month. We got outside a lot. Anthea learned to walk, and it made outdoor adventures a little easier. We visited with Grandma Jane and Papa Dan a lot and had a few visits from friends and my brother’s new girlfriend, Chloe (who brings baked goods along, and is quite popular with Rosemary, ha!).
We found some new parks, and visited many toddler...

A happy birthday cupcake for a sweet, happy girl.
She mostly mashed the frosting around and tasted less than ended up on her clothes. But still, that face says, “Mmmmm!”

So here’s to a child who is joyful and clever. Happy Day. Happy Year....
– From “Happy Birthday, Little Pookie,” by Sandra Boynton. The perfect little book, for little “pooks” everywhere. And one of Anthea’s gifts this year.

A year ago today, we welcomed Anthea into our lives. What a joy it was to find out who’d been inside me for those long months. A beautiful baby girl, placed in our arms. I will never forget that February 21, those first moments, or this first year when our helpless infant changed so much into this spunky kid.
Anthea is now walking (but still prefers crawling for speed, and man,...

Today is a momentous day. It’s Anthea’s last day as a baby. I’m allowing myself a little sadness at the swift passing of time, but mainly, I’m celebrating one amazingly wonderful year, with one very special girl. Plus… she’ll always be my baby.
In our family tradition, I’m sharing a video of highlights from her first year. Sleep tight, little one, for...
