I cannot do anything. The TV’s too loud (and do I really need to watch Gossip Girl anyway?) Unloading the dishwasher would be a catastrophic clanging of wakefulness. At least the dog’s asleep.
I can hear the baby up there babbling. Laying in her crib, not asleep. Oh, now she’s clapping. The kid has the nerve to clap. She breaks my heart and my spirit all at once. Her gums feel...

This would be the first 60 seconds of our day. Captured via breathtaking iPhone image. Yikes.

I’ve consumed far too much caffeine lately. Turns out moving really quickly to another country is stressful. I will be really glad when everything is done and we are Seattle-bound.
In the meantime, I am eating crumpets and drinking Dr. Pepper Zero, because you can get these amazing things in the UK and we only have like 20 days left. And preparing for the Royal Wedding. And trying to...

Dear Rosie,
Nine months old! Ah! So big. I looked at you in your stroller the other day, and you suddenly looked like a little kid, and no longer a baby. You still have the tiniest feet, though, but are tall and chunky. You have four teeth now…two more made their sharp appearance in just the past two days (and we’ve all lost sleep over them). You have cockatoo hair, which is...

It’s so hot here. We tried to go out to the city to walk around, but there were so many tourists and no parking and Rosie was getting far too pink-cheeked in her car seat. So we came home, stripped her down, and gave her a popsicle (a 100% real fruit one). After some initial confusion of whether to eat the stick or risk touching her lips to the freezing orange thing, she figured it out....

New books! And Max’s Chocolate Chicken is Easter-y themed, so it arrived just in time. Speaking of Easter, I ate my first (and last) Cadbury Egg of the season. Andrew can down them like no other, but they hurt my teeth just thinking about how sweet they are. And no Cadbury Egg tasting for baby.
We met up with Andrew for lunch today, and Rosie enjoyed both the breadsticks and the...

Guys….make it go!
And so we do. Among other things. She moves from activity to activity like a little bear cub. I try to stand back and let her explore, but she is constantly pushing her boundaries (climbing up using a lamp, eating a magazine, and do you see those DVDs and games in the background on that little shelf? That’s pretty much her favorite destructive haunt ever).
This...
"The Mother’s Prayer for Its Daughter"
First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.
May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.
When the Crystal Meth is offered, May she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.
Guide her, protect her
When crossing...

It’s still warm and spring-like here in our part of the world. The birds are singing, the flowers are blooming (in fact, there is a vase full of lilac on our kitchen table), and Rosie enjoys feeling her bare toes in the grass (socks are so overrated). We take the dog on a long walk every day, and she likes to watch fetch. She claps and kicks and giggles when she sees Southpaw dashing...

Website review: Woodentoyshop.co.uk
So, Rosemary loves wooden toys, and so do I. Not only are they timeless and classic in look, but they are colorful and solidly built and she keeps coming back to them again and again.
This is why I was very pleased to find woodentoyshop.co.uk. As they say it: “Wooden toys offer something tangible in our increasingly virtual world and whilst we fully embrace the new opportunities offered...

Easter party today with one of our groups. I made cupcakes to bring (buoyed by renewed energy after last nights 7-hour-continuous stretch of sleep!). And it was fancy-dress for the kids, and I threw together a costume before we left the house. Andrew ran to the shops near his work to find some bunny ears and he did a good job providing a key piece to my creation. I’ll have you...

I am really excited about Easter, for some reason. You have no idea how jazzed I am to watch Rosemary hunt for an egg (I would say “eggs,” but let’s be honest, she’ll sit and play with the first item she stumbles upon for a good 15-20 minutes) hidden two feet in front of her in very, very short grass.
Now, I’ve avoided discussing anything too controversial on my...
A complete stranger saw me in town with Rosie yesterday, and said, “Oh my, you’ve certainly got your hands full!” She’s a little, um, strong-willed. It’s not that she’s a tiny terror—she isn’t throwing tantrums, making messes, screaming, ruining fellow patrons’ dining experiences—nothing like that. On the contrary, she’s very well...

Life has gotten a lot more interesting the past couple of weeks. I put together this from some clips I took of Rosie becoming increasingly more mobile. She really has put the heat on now, and we have our hands full.

Big day out today. We drove down to Portsmouth to look at the historic shipyard, go to the aquarium, and walk along the seaside. We ended up going into the D-Day museum, too, because Andrew’s kind of a WWII history buff (hence our baby riding in a tank).
Rosemary was so good in the car and slept both there and back. She’s the best, most flexible, portable child ever. Just...

I was walking Southpaw this afternoon and thought it would be a brilliant idea to go on a picnic tonight. So we did. And we brought bubbles. There is nothing more adorable than Rosie flapping her arms in wild, bubble excitement. Also, the bubbles scare Southpaw, so that’s fun to watch, too.
I think that second picture might be my favorite I’ve ever taken.

You scream, waking from a nightmare. When I sleepwalk into your room, and pick you up, and hold you up in the moonlight, you cling to me hard, as if clinging could save us. I think you think I will never die, I think I exude to you the permanence of smoke or stars, even as my broken arms heal themselves around you. 2 I have heard you tell the sun, don’t go down, I have stood by as you told the...

We walked with Southpaw to our secret park. I tried to get cute pictures of Rosemary, sitting barefoot in the grass. All she wanted to do was eat grass, like a baby cow. And all Southpaw wanted to do was run around like a maniac in the background of every picture. So…this is what I got.
In other news, baby is being a grumpus, and I’m not seeing much of her usual smiles. Teething,...

The big, scary Internet
Blogging has become a part of my life. Much more so than I ever thought it would. Not so much because I enjoy attention (I really, really don’t), but because I enjoy writing and photography and it’s a good way to practice those hobbies. And because I was raised in an age of technology and I am keen on this blog as a modern baby book. But lately, this little ol’ blog of mine has...
